Every single person in this chain thought the transfer was a bad idea. Yet, they all agreed to it.
What happened?
This is the Abilene Paradox. It occurs when a group of people collectively decide on a course of action that is counter to the preferences of many or all of the individuals in the group.
- Fear of conflict: No one wanted to be the "bad guy" or block the bed.
- Pluralistic Ignorance: Everyone assumed everyone else wanted to do it.
- Outcome: Resources were wasted, and the patient suffered a painful, unnecessary journey.
The Fix: Create a "Psychological Safety" check.
"Does anyone actually think this will help?"
